Lotería de Navidad
The Christmas is quickly approaching and so is the “Lotería de Navidad’, the Spanish Christmas lottery. It’s said to be the biggest lottery in the world as well as amongst the oldest, dating back to 1812.
The streets of Madrid have been characterized by long queues since weeks, especially in some strategic spots, such as by Doña Manolita’s lottery office at the Calle de Carmen. The drawn to know the lucky winners of El Gordo and other prizes will start in any minutes. The results will be shared in the direct TV show, where kids from the colegio de San Ildefonso will sing the winning numbers. Fingers crossed!
Chocolate con churros
Chocolate con churros is a great treat during the winter months, although they are served throughout the year in ‘chocolaterías’, ‘churrerías’ or regular bars. One of the most delicious churros and porras (a thicker and longer version of churros) in Madrid can be enjoyed in Chocolatería de San Ginés, open since 1894. It is conveniently located a few minutes away from the Plaza Mayor or Puerto del Sol and open all night.
5000 sheep in the centre of Madrid
Five thousands sheep passed through the centre of Madrid today.
The Fiesta de la Transhumancia to celebrate traditional long distance transhumance of livestock took place in Madrid today.
Transhumance is the seasonal movement of herds, mainly sheep, from lowlands to highland and vice versa using a network of transhumance routes or “cañadas” over distances of 600 to 800 kilometers in search of green pastures.
Today’s festival demonstrated Madrid was (and still is) on a transhumance pathway.
Traditional costumes, with really funky shoes, beautiful horses and all those sheep were great fun to watch.
The Spanish Revolution: 15-M Back on Madrid Streets
This weekend Spain saw the return of its revolution. People involved in the 15-M movement are again on the streets. This time demonstrations have a global dimension. Tens of thousands of people (half a million according to organisers) are currently gathered on Puerta del Sol.
Here’s a photo of the protests taken earlier today.
And here are a few more taken back in May on Puerta del Sol.
